Chapter 1: You Can See Me.
/The pizza is here." A small giraffe announces. His name is Meep he's a guardian to a young women named Saturn.
Saturn is laying on the ground reading. She looks up from her book. "When did you order a pizza?"
"18 minutes ago, now here..." He throws a jacket at her and some cash.
"Why do you always order food but make me get it?" She complains.
"Because as a two foot tall mini talking giraffe I can't just walk down without causing a scene."
Saturn gets up and sighs putting on the jacket. She walks to the lobby and the delivery guy smiles at her and pulls out the pizza. "Saturn Prunancia?"
She hands him the money. "Yup. That's me." She takes the pizza and puts it on the table in the lobby. "Might as well check the mail." She mumbles under her breath. As She puts the key in the lock she hears a thud from outside. She sees the pizza man laying on the floor outside the door. She opens the door. "Are you okay?" she asks.
He looks over at her, gets up, and laughs. "I'm fine I just ran into something, it was weird." Saturn looks around and sees a unicorn on the sidewalk looking at him. She looks back at the delivery man he doesn't seem to see the unicorn.
This isn't the first time she's been able to notice something that nobody else does. About a year ago unicorns started appearing. Slowly, one by one, they just showed up. Some people tried to kill them, but they disappeared before getting harmed. Some people just took pictures of them, girls would stop and take selfies and post them on social media. And of course some people feared them, they thought they were a sign from above, a sign that the end was near. As time went by the unicorns just stayed around and people got less and less interested. People still took photos with them, coordinating their outfits with the unicorns fur, but sometimes a unicorn will be standing around and no one will pay attention. It's not that they don't care that it's there it's as if no one can see them. Saturn can always see them. She doesn't know what they mean, or why they showed up, but she doesn't like them. When no one can see them they watch the world in a different way. Menacing, almost as if they're plotting something. Saturn notices the unicorn, that's watching the delivery man, has the same look on his face.
Before Saturn can call out to get his attention and bring him back inside the unicorn rushes at the delivery man stabbing him in the chest with its horn. The beast pauses holding him high in the air and blood drips down his chest onto the horses face. The unicorn drops him to the ground the creatures teeth grow into fangs. It bows its head and starts to eat its victim. Saturn is frozen in disbelief as to what she saw. She's never seen a unicorn harm anyone before and the only thing she's seen them eat is grass. As she's trying to wrap her mind around what just happened the unicorn spots her.
It lifts its head up and opens its blood filled mouth and speaks.
"You can see me.”
"Shit!" She pulls on the door to get in and its locked. Saturn searches her pockets for her keys but it's useless, looking in the window she sees the keys hanging out of her mailbox lock. "Shit!" she repeats. She hears heavy hoofs walking towards her and she spins around. The unicorn is coming to her.
"How can you see me?" It asks in a deep voice.
"I don't know! Just... Just stay away from me!" She says. The Unicorn laughs loudly.
"Ohh you can see me AND you can hear me, that's interesting."
Saturn flinches. Stupid, no one has ever reported that unicorns could speak. "Of course I can hear you, you're talking to me." She says defensively.
"You poor human, you have no idea what's going on do you?"
Saturn reaches behind her and rings the bell for her apartment.
"Saturn, did you lock yourself out again?" Meeps voice calls through the speaker.
Before she can reply the unicorn charges at Saturn and she jumps out of his way. His horn pierces deep in the speaker as he pulls the horn out pieces fall to the ground. "We were talking." The unicorn says, but when he turns back to face her she's gone. The unicorn sighs and heads back to the delivery man. "Might as well eat before I call this one in to the boss."
Saturn climbs the fire escape to her window and softly taps on it.
Meep opens the window and looks at her. "What happened? Where's the pizza?"
Saturn climbs through the window and shuts it behind her. "The pizza is down stairs." She explains what happened as she goes around the apartment grabbing various knives.
"So that's why the number of missing persons has gone up." Meep says.
Saturn pulls a long knife out of her freezer and places it in a holder. "What do you mean?"
Meep starts typing on the computer and opens up a message board. "Missing persons is up 65%"
Saturn grabs another knife from under her bed. "And that's because the unicorns are eating them?" Meep types more as Saturn counts her blades. 10 knives... I'm missing some.
"You know I work better on a full stomach." Meep says. Saturn squints at the little guardian and grabs a curved knife before running out the door. She returns with the pizza, her keys, and the mail.
"You were saying?" She says eating a slice of pizza and looking out the window. The body and the unicorn are gone.
"Missing persons started going up a year ago. The only thing that overlaps with that time is..."
Saturn interrupts him. "The unicorns started appearing."
Meep looks over the knives she's gathered. "You forgot the ones in the closet."
Saturn gets up and grabs a box of knives on a shelf. "How likely is he going to come back?" she asks, as she lays the knives out on the table.
"78% and he'll come back with others." Meep says while packing his bag.
Saturn's quiet as she lets her hair down and runs her fingers through it. Her hair falls down just past her shoulders, she sits at the table, and looks at the knives. They aren't regular kitchen knives or your average pocket knives. They're foldable knives, with a circle in the center, total length about 7 inches with a 2 inch blade. Saturn’s hair wakes up and strands wrap around each other forming thick twists. Each twists of hair grabs the loop of a knife folding the blades in before twisting up on top of her head. The handles of the knives stick out of her hair in a circle around a bun in the middle. She stands and attaches the knife holder, with two arm length blades one straight the other curved, to her hips.
Meep puts his bag on his back and looks out the window. "They're back. Wanna take the easy way out or the hard way out?"
Saturn smiles at meep. "What do you think?"
Drizzle Here! I recently read a quote about how the first time you do something it will suck. So I'm just telling myself...
"Your first chapter will be awful, but you can't make your 50th without making your first."
So here is the first. I have so many stories that are mostly finished but it only makes sense to start with Saturn's story. Thanks for reading! I'll be updating every Wednesday. Hopefully I'll see you then.
